Secret War Journal[31 August - 1 September 2013]
This was truly an impromptu event. We did not plan for this outing in the slightest bit.

Elusyf
It all began with a trip to meet up with Jia Ying, a fellow committee member of Ignite! to discuss a potential business venture. Johnston tagged along to listen and provide feedback.

Before we attended the business idea presentation per se, we did some catching up since we last met up. (Before our graduation?)

A little bit of background for Jia Ying, she is now an undergraduate pursuing Psychology. Chancing upon a opportunity to work part-time while studying, she is sharing to her friends about it.

Frankly, the business model of Elusyf is decent but I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting something else. I went to the venue expecting something of a smaller scale to start with. Unfortunately, I instead encountered a model that I was familiar with (and one that I should embrace with caution at that too).

Thus, reaching to the same decision as Debbie, I tagged along with Johnston to Sands Expo & Convention Center to attend the Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention.

Photos, photos, photos!
Due to the enormous amount pictures we took during the span of 2 days, I will give you the link to the whole album here to prevent me spamming (and lagging your internet browser) you with pictures. Enjoy!

Another cosplayer that graced the event, she is from the United States. The link is as follows: https://www.facebook.com/pages/VAMPY-BIT-ME/370120112710

One of the notable games that were showcased was Disney's Infinity.
This game, (do not quote me because even until now. I am not very sure what this game is about), seems to be quite similar to Mindcraft. In this game, the player decides the rules and the gameplay. That means you, as the player can do whatever you want. It is like a sandbox game, only weirder. I had a lot of difficulty trying to play this game as I was too used to having a clear objective to achieve in a game. (I think my imagination skills are not as good as before, huh?)

What sets this game apart from the likes of Minecraft is that Disney incorporates the element of collectibles into the game. To be able to use the character, you would first need to own a specific figurine meant for the game.  For example, if you would like to use Mickey Mouse, you need to have the Mickey Mouse figurine. To activate the character in the game, you would need to place the figurine on a detector (which I presume uses NFC technology to identify the figurine). This idea may sound cool to onlookers but it makes this game really costly. Hence, it is unlikely I would ever buy such a game.

You can read Gamespot's review here.

Looking ahead
After this event, we are setting our sights on AFA SG 2013 on 7-9 November 2013.

I am considering buying a 1 <3 AniSong concert ticket for the first time. If I buy it, it should be on the 8 Nov. Are you going too? :)

Secret War Journal[July 2013]
Hey readers! How are you guys doing?

A new chapter of my life just started this Monday. I will be even busier, if that was even possible. While I struggle to write finish my post, allow me to share with you a music interest of mine.

As some of you might know, vocaloids are all the rage in Japan. While I do listen to songs from Hatsune Miku, I enjoy the covers made by a group of people as well. Collectively, we call them the Nico Nico Chorus. This month, I went to check out some of the songs made by these groups of singers. Enjoy!

The Liar in Your Life

Sunday, July 21, 2013
Secret War Journal[July 2013][Long Post]
Recently, I picked up this book in in the library as a form of self-help during my time in camp.

Synopsis:
Author: Robert Feldman
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0753515652

The Liar in Your Life describes the surprising and sobering reality of lying in everyday life, based on nearly three decades of research by author Robert Feldman. One of his most striking findings, that has been tested repeatedly, is that new acquaintances will lie to each other about three times in the course of a ten minute conversation. These may seem to be so-called "little white lies"—innocent evasions like "I feel fine" or "I like your dress" or "You were amazing"—but those lies exact a cost. When we know we’re being dishonest, we feel less trusting about our environment and the people around us. And those little lies create a climate for greater deceptions, leading to "a culture of lies" that pervades today’s society.

- Cited from http://www.robertfeldman.org/

"Because anyone who says they always tell the truth is a liar"

I remembered the initial reactions of my colleagues in the camp. They were commenting that I was being self-conscious, leading me to read this book. Here is where the assumptions of what this book is about and what it is really about are different. If you had read the synopsis carefully, you would realise that it is slightly different from what you would had imagined from just looking at the book cover. Recall that the book's author is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and that this book serves to explore the rationale behind lying and why we readily accept those lies. Of course, this would involve lies told by ourselves and it also involves strategies on leading a more honest life. (I seem to recall my goal to cut down on lies back in secondary school. Hahas!)

As you probably figured it out by now, me being self-conscious is not completely off. However, the main motivation for picking up this book was to confirm some of my suspicions about deception. After all, since young, I was fascinated by human behaviours. This book will help me to confirm if certain human behaviour are influenced by the use of deception.

Not disappointing me, the book explored many theories and models. First which would be the...

[Disclaimer: I will write briefly on the ideas covered in the book. For more elaborate, and accurate, description, please read the book itself.]

The Liar Advantage
Before we go into the 'why', perhaps we should first discuss about the 'how'. The book gave very compelling evidence on our inability to prevent lies.
--
Truth Detection
At some point, most of us will feel confident that we would be able to tell when someone is lying. Unfortunately, unknown to us, our truth detection skills are not that great after all. A study by Ekman found that most trained and experienced lie-catchers did not do better than flipping a coin to guess if the person was lying. That is worrying because these are the people you would expect to be professional in detecting deception. If they are not very successful in detecting liars, where does that leaves us? If our lack of skills is not enough, liars have others up their sleeves to ensure their lies go undetected.
--
Averted Gaze
Perhaps the most useful tool in the arsenal of liars would be the myth that liars often has a 'tell' when they are lying. This could be in the form of the infamous 'Avert Gaze' or the involuntary touching of the face.

While it is agreed that some liars subconsciously do exhibit such behaviour, one should take note not to generalise this observation to each and every potential person telling a lie. In fact, the book suggests that liars actually make use of this myth against us.

An experienced liar would be aware of his 'tell' when he is lying. Armed with this knowledge, he would make a conscious effort to mask the 'tell'. For example, knowing that common folks believe that avoid eye contact is an indication of lying, the liar will make sure that he makes eye contact with the victim to not rouse suspicions. In addition, if he has a habit of touching his left ear when he is lying, he would make sure that his hands are by his side at all times. It would take effort but it would not draw the suspicion of the victim. The victim, not noticing any 'tell', believes that the liar is not lying.
--
Truth Bias
If this was not bad enough, studies suggests that humans may have a truth bias ingrained in our brains. What this truth bias does is to cause us to have a tendency to trust another person without question. Being social creatures, we tend to trust someone we just met than to distrust him. That is the reason why it is so easy to lie to someone without getting caught. In fact, most of us would accept what a stranger claims. How many of us would wonder if there was really a discount at the nearby supermarket when your friend took you about it?

Researchers believe that the reason that we have such a truth bias could be attributed to the fact that we are inherently cognitive misers. This means that we tend to go on "energy saving" mode. Rather than think hard on every piece of information presented to us, our brain goes lazy on us and just declare that the source is trustworthy and does not bother to utilise mental power on it. This causes us to simply accept the information as truth. Hence, resulting in the truth bias.
--
Willing Accomplice
To make matters worse, sometimes we are lied to but we do not detect the lie because we do not wish to believe it is, in fact, a lie. This is not to be confused with self-deception. In this case, you are not the liar. Rather, you are what researchers call "the Willing Accomplice". You may think that this does not make sense, why would we help the liar? The fact remains that, as humans, we are socially insecure. Thus, when someone compliment us, we would want to believe it to be true. Hence, we choose to turn a blind eye to the possibility of a lie subconsciously, allowing ourselves to be lied to. This makes us the willing accomplice to the act. (Ask yourself, did you ever doubt your uncle saying you are pretty?)

All these factors made lie detection very difficult. Their ability and our inability work hand in hand to make each lie go unseen.

Roots of Deception
The book then went on to explain the possible motivations behind lying.
--
Upbringing
It is believed that our personal upbringing plays a role in our frequency of lying. How many of us never ever lied in our entire life? Studies have shown that children may lie as early as at the age of 3. (Shocking, yes) This is observed when an experiment was conducted with the subject being placed in a room fitted with one-way windows. The child is then instructed by an adult to not touch the toy placed on a table in the room. After giving the instructions, the adult would leave the room. Left alone, the child is likely to touch the toy out of curiosity. Later, the child is asked if he had touched the toy during the adult's absence. Through repeated experiments, it is found that most children would lie that they did not. What the experiment imply is that either we are designed to lie in our blood or the environment in which our children grew up in encourages deception.

This should come as no surprise as the parents themselves lie. Despite our best efforts as parents to not lie in front of our children, it is inevitable for such a situation to occur. Over time, the child will learn from the social interactions between adults and pick up the skills required to lie during social interactions.
--
Lies of Convenience
The idea that evolution enabled us to use deception as a means of socialising is not as shocking as initially thought. Certain lies help to drive the conversation forward. Sometimes we lie in agreement to a question so that the conversation would not come to a halt to explain an idea. For example, during a conversation with your friends, he was sharing about his experience during his vacation in Australia. He continued to talk about his time in Mornington and he paused. He asked, "You know where is Mornington right?" Instinctively, most would reply yes even though he might not have the slightest clue where in Australia is that. (Do not laugh, I had seen such things happening when I probe further.) These are the lies we make without so much as battling an eyelid but it drives the point - Lies are everywhere. Lies are a part of what makes us human. Without it, we cannot function effectively as social beings in society. We coin such forms of lying as Lies of Convenience.
--
Self-Deception
Another form that we are all more familiar with would be self-deception

I am sure that at some point of time, you would had intentionally or unintentionally lied to yourself. Whether it was to boost our self-esteem or protect our fragile mind from breaking apart, whatever the reasons, it is likely that we are guilty of it. It could be as harmless as believing that you had already arrived at the answer before your friends revealed it.
--
Cosmetic Lies
A similar form would be cosmetic lies - lies which we make to make ourselves feel good. While self-deception is applied on ourselves where people would not be able to know you are actually doing it, cosmetic lies are told to a victim. A famous example would be a resume. There are people who place fictitious but outstanding credentials in their resume to land a job. The liar presents a better image of himself to others by fabricating certain achievements. This is the act of cosmetic lying. That said, adding false information in one's resume may be an extreme case. Cosmetic lies can be found in everyday conversations. Suppose you were in a conversation with your friend. He was boasting how he had found an insect with the size of his index finger. Not wanting to be outdone by him, you may had lied that you had seen insects the size of your palm. (Sometimes, you wonder if our ego is too big for comfort. Hahas.)
--
Lies with Intent
Ah, this might had been the reason that you had picked up the book in the first place. This form of lies are the most notorious lies, in that, these are the lies that made it to the news. While most of us may be unaware of other forms of lies, we would be most familiar with this.
Malicious lies are grouped with this form of lies. In this case,  liars use deception on their victims to profit from it. Take the case of a simple scam. You are walking along the streets and a lady approached you. She claims to be doing a donation drive for the physically disabled. Due to the fact that we are such cognitive misers, we thought it was an ordinary flag day. As such, we donated without much thought. Little did you know that you had just 'donated' to a non-existent charity foundation.
Of course, there are worse lies being carried out. Be it ponzi scams or frauds, we often heard about it.
--
Media-manufactured Lies
While the other forms of lies have been around us for time eternal since we started to socialise, deception have also evolved to involve the media.
Advertisements are a heavy user of such tactics. By portraying how we should look, defining beauty, it deceives the audience that they need to purchase certain products to look good. Effectively, it takes advantage of our insecurity.
One good example found in the book was how the media was used during 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremony in Beijing. Apparently, the fireworks shown on television were not real. It was the work by the media[1].In addition, it was later discovered that the little girl, Lin Miaoke who sang "Ode to the Motherland" during the opening ceremony was actually just lip-syncing. The real singer was another girl named Yang Peiyi. Imagine the uproar then. (This despite it being written in the programme notes)
Lip-syncing is actually a common practice but the audience still cannot help but feel cheated when they find out[2].
--
Web of Deceit
Finally, a relatively new form of deception takes place in the worldwide web. One fault of us is that we tend to accept anything found on the Internet as credible (which is not true!) This is what makes such deception so widespread. Write a story and the audience will believe it to be true.

Conclusion
If you are interested in the workings of the various means of deception and the motivations behind it, do pick up this book. I hope I had piqued your interest in this book. :)

Secret War Journal[17 June 2013]
First and foremost, I would like thank all those who remembered my birthday.
It is so bright outside. I am jealous.

I am so glad that I was allowed to take leave for the week which my birthday falls on.

As I had mentioned many times already, June is not a happy month for me (mostly). I am not going to say out why here. Perhaps I had mentioned it some years back but I have no intention to repeat it. Sorry.

Although it is the holiday season now, I was informed of my leave a little late. Not many people could take leave today. I would be a little bit heartless if I said I do not feel a little bit sad. Then again, it could be just me being more emotional and sensitive during this period of time. Not to mention that my anger is almost left unchecked during this period. While I try to be calm, I need a month to berserk for a while so as to maintain my sanity for the next one year.

After all, the trend had been that the world turns against me during the month of June.

My armour is like paper, do not kill me please.
A lot of bad stuff had happened this month, not surprisingly. I am not planning to write those events down either (no point making everyone depressed over stuff to which we have no control over, huh?) and I think it is better to forget such things even occurred in the first place. :P

Best Friend's Home is Home
What better than being able to visit my best friend's house after so long? I miss the times when I could stayover for a week at Johnston's house. Come the present, I am now in army and he is University. Even if he is free, most of the time, I am too preoccupied with work to be able to set aside days to stayover. Thus, I was actually glad that I managed to get this time to do some house visit.

There, I spent the whole morning at the dining table just chatting with him. It really brings back memories of the past where we simply sat in the canteen after school, talking until the early evening.

As the saying goes, time passes when you are having fun. Before long, it is lunch time. Emelia had woken up and joined us for lunch. After lunch, we went up to the computer room, as so to not disturb Emelia who was studying at the dining table. (After a moment, she started to comment that we were avoiding her, which is of course not true. Hahas!)

As unexpected as it was, we ended up playing Dragon Nest in the computer room. One reason was because the controllers for Xbox and Wii ran out of battery so we could not play them. To make things interesting and refreshing for us, we tried each other's characters in the game.

Admittedly, it was my first time trying out the Warrior class in the game. Boy, the playing style for warrior is really different. It was contrast to my archer attacking from far away, away from enemy fire. The first few runs as a warrior was rather chaotic. I found that, as a warrior, you would spam the left mouse button quite badly. Hmm....

Another class I got to try was the Kali class. Similar to the warrior in the sense that she is also a melee class character, using her requires more hit-and-run tactics.

Tarots
Before I end off this post, I also would like to thank the following people for gifting me these presents> :)
  • Keller - Tarot Card Deck

  • Johnston - Razer Mouse (Using now! :)
  • Emelia - Shirt (Thank you! I like it!)
  • Marcus - Phone Accessory with my Korean Name and Artillery Badge
  • Lera - Notebook (Unexpected, I must say)

Bang!

Sunday, June 16, 2013
Secret War Journal[15 June 2013][Long Post][Picture-Heavy]
Author's Note:
Phew! It has been really long time since I last published a post huh? I am so glad I finally have some time to myself because for the good half of this week, I'm on leave. Hahas!

With us today at The Mind Cafe in Funan Digital IT mall are Darian, Johnston and Qi Xiang. Sadly, the rest of them was not able to make it but oh well, 4 people, just nice for almost every board game.
Mind Cafe @ FUNAN IT MALL

Today, we are trying this new game called 'Bang!'. To be honest with you, I am not sure if I should label it as a card game or a board game since it has both. Hmm...

I think I would label it as a board game since Settlers of Catan is a board game and it has both. :)

Moving on, the first time I heard from this game was from Adrian (I think?) some years back during my days as a Junior College student. (Ah, I feel old already.) Then, we never really got into playing it because I just never chanced upon it outside. Hahas! Recently, this year during my work retreat at a chalet (will be posting on that), one of my colleague, Melvin also mentioned this board game.

Clearly, that was a sign as come today, lo and behold, this board game caught our eye.
--
Bang! is a game that is based on the Wild Wild West. Basically, there are 3 types of characters in this game - Sheriff, Outlaw, Renegade. Sheriff's role is to apprehend both the Outlaws and the Renegades. Inversely, the Outlaw's objective is to work together with other Outlaws to remove the Sheriff from play. Lastly, the Renegade's job is to eradicate everyone in the game to become the last man standing.

In addition to this, there are many classes that each character can be in the game. Each classes has its own special abilities which would be constantly be in effect in the game. Such effects could include discarding 2 cards to heal for 1 hp or increasing the distance from you to other players to make it difficult for them to shoot you. The amount of health you have would be determined by the class you choose.

Trying out Bang!
For the first game, I was the Sheriff. At this point, you must be wondering 'How do you decide who plays as who?' Well, you are not allowed to choose. Thus, at the start of each game, the character cards would be shuffled and randomly assigned to players. Only the Sheriff would place his character card face-up, announcing to everyone who is the Sheriff. (Obviously, the outlaws and the renegades do not play fair.)

My action cards
Moving on, there are many different kinds of action cards that can be played during your turn in Bang! Firstly, there is a 'bang' card where you shoot at someone. Who you can shoot depends on the distance between you and the target as well as the range of your weapon. To summarise, the longer the range of your weapon and the closer you are to your target, the better. The distance between you and the target is determined by the seating arrangement of the players. The distance between me and those beside me is 1 and so on. Unless specified otherwise, each player can only shoot once each turn.

Secondly, there is a counter card called 'miss'. This card can only be played when you are being shot. This card is useful in saving yourself from losing health.

Thirdly, there is a card named 'beer' that heals you for one health.

For other special action cards, feel free to read up on them when you play the boardgame! (I cannot list them all down, there are so many different kinds!)

Johnston has got to stop using Beer! He is almost immortal in this game!
The Sheriff got taken down! Outlaws win!
Second game! Johnston's the Sheriff this time round. Renegade wins.
Things get more interesting when the Sheriff manage to take out the outlaws. Left with the renegade, it is now a deathmatch between the two. The objectives are now very clear cut, be the last man standing to win. That said, it is not that easy for the Sheriff to win in this game.

After a few rounds of Bang!, we decided to change the game. By popular demand, we chose Munchkin.

Players (from top left, clockwise): Darian, Qi Xiang, Myself, Johnston

Level 3 at the start? That fast?
The thing about playing with veterans is that the game gets heated up quickly. Already, everyone is trying to prevent each other from becoming too powerful in the game.

Who needs levels when you have good equipments?
Most notable was the time when Qi Xiang decided to gamble on his levels to steal some items from us. At the cost of 2 levels, apparently he saw great potential in that item. Was it worth it? Time will tell.

Darian overtook Johnston!
As everyone approaches level 10, the number of action cards being thrown just intensifies. Within a round, Johnston reached level 9, reclaiming the spot as the highest level.

Will Johnston win next turn?
Nope, not going to happen.
Responding to this, Qi Xiang and I eliminated the threat of Johnston winning by making him lose 4 levels during his battle with his monster. Taking advantage of this chaos, Darian gained a level to level 9. Now, he is on track to winning next turn. But, would he?

Reaching end-game setting soon
Unfortunately for Darian, he could not find a monster to fight while the rest of us gained levels during our turns. Despite my initial lack of equipments, I managed to salvage some items to catch up with the rest. Phew, who is going to win? It is anyone's guess now.

Just how many items can Qi Xiang equip?!
With the latest addition of the kneecaps of allure, I am on track to winning! However, notice how well-equipped is Qi Xiang right now.

Out of the blue, Qi Xiang turned level 9 and we had to throw everything we had at him as he was really too well-equipped.

Qi Xiang's equipments the round before

Some of the cards used during the final battle
In the end, we failed in our attempt to prevent Qi Xiang from defeating that army of monsters. I guess good equipments bring you a long way in Munchkin. :)

Darian is not happy to hear that. He was supposed to win (since he was level 9 for so long). Hahas!
Stay silent and strike at the last moment.
Other cards used during the game (which I cannot fit anywhere)
You are not making this easy for me to escape right?
When in danger, run!
One painful hammer, that one.
What's this? Designed by Darian
With that, we moved on to Blokus!

For those unfamiliar with this game, the objective is to be the last man standing in the game. Somewhat similar to Tetris, you need to place as many pieces on the board game as you can. There is one condition - all your pieces must be connected via the edges of the pieces and they cannot be in contact with each other, i.e. side by side.

The start of the four great continents. Who will conquer this new world?

Blue: Darian Ng (America)
Red: Lim Qi Xiang (Russia)
Yellow: LeRoy Lim (India / Thailand / Ukraine)
Green: Johnston Tang Gin Xiang (Pakistan)
--

After playing these games, Johnston went for Violin lessons while we walked around the shop to kill time.

Hmm, where is Johnston?
Why are you taking pictures of us?!
Photo-bomb!
As it turned out, Johnston was already downstairs. Hahas! We had dinner at Pastamania and shortly left for home. :)

What a blast I had today! Wohoo!
See you guys next time! :)

Iron Man 3

Sunday, May 19, 2013
Secret War Journal[18 May 2013][Spoiler Alert]
I apologise for the lack of activity prior to this post. I had been busy with work and the physical copy of my journal was (and as of now, still is) loaned to a close friend of mine. I cannot publish the post without it. Thus, I seek your understanding to bear with it. :P

Woah, it has been some time since I went out for leisure! I had weekend shifts every alternate week recently. Compounded by the fact that most of my friends were having their finals examinations, I really had no one to go out with. Hahas!

After some time, I was really dying to out and unwind. So when Marcus asked if I wanted to watch Iron Man 3, I readily agreed.

Yeah, I know I am late to the bandwagon but hey! Better late than never right?

Plot Summary
Marvel's "Iron Man 3" pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

My view
While I like how the introduction went (like a form of foreshadowing), one part of me wished they left that detail as a mystery. Nevertheless, it did threw me off track for a while since I thought for a moment that Aldrich was Mandarin. Hey, they looked similar, sorta.

Despite what other reviewers thrash about the movie, you must admit that the Aldrich's plan is well-thought. To have a scapegoat like Mandarin is brilliant, provided you do not get caught up in it too. In this case, Aldrich's downfall lies in the fact that he was too openly involved in his experiments. He should had used Mandarin as a puppet thoroughly, only talking through him, such that no one else would be able to identify him as the mastermind if caught. Furthermore, why would you get an actor such as Trevor? Yes, while I agree that he had to get a clueless actor but, an actor that reveals everything to any random stranger? Not the best choice, in my opinion.

Aldrich's mistakes start from the very beginning, when he approached Pepper. This encounter led to Happy being injured in an explosion after tailing Savin, ultimately bringing Stark into the game. Why would you invite disaster into your doorstep? I guess he was blinded by revenge to care. Pity.

Granted, the humour, iconic presence in the Iron Man franchise, is ever still present though remarkably less in this latest film. Watching this movie made me compare to the Dark Knight series unconsciously. After all, the plot this time is much darker than the previous two. With themes such as revenge, humiliation, and growing up, it is difficult to imagine this film being targeted at family. Rather, it is for mature teenagers and above.

Well, he did ask for a digital watch

NIS IDA Interview #1

Tuesday, April 30, 2013
Secret War Journal[?? April 2013]
Today, I went for the first round of interview for the National Infocomm Scholarship (NIS). While preparing for the interview, I noticed that there hardly any material on it for applicants to prepare on. Yes, I could find some information regarding the conduct of the interview but they are dated some five years ago. Furthermore, according to my senior, the procedures had since changed, rendering the information useless. Thus, it is my hope, in writing this post, future candidates have a greater idea on what to expect on the date of their IDA NIS interview.

(Disclaimer: Given the dynamics of the scholarship. I must emphasize that there is a high chance that there would be changes in the conduct of the interview. Above all, do not be unnerved if the interview is not as you expect and perform your best!)

Phase 1: Lobby
I am of the opinion that it is a taboo to be late for an interview. So for any readers interested in attending an interview, the first rule is "Do not be late." (I am curious, drop me a message if you, for whatever reasons, were late for an interview and successfully entered the next round. Thanks!)
However, depending on how you look at it, reaching the venue early may be to your advantage or disadvantage. As many would like to phrase it, the interview begins the moment you enter the lobby. The interviewers may not be there but the receptionist may actually be observing you, passing information to the interviewers at the end of the session for evaluation.
For myself, I did not talk much compared to the group at the other table. However, we made conversation which allowed me to know some of the candidates better. (Yes, one could also use this to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors. Of course, it would not hurt to make some friends. :)

Phase 2: Self-Advertisement
After all the candidates gathered, we are directed to the conference room. In there, we are given a set of paper with questions for us to answer. In the questionnaire, there are questions pertaining to one's character. For example, one could be asked to write down a past experience which demonstrated one's integrity. The queer thing was that we are advised to write around 500 words per question. What was unrealistic was the fact we were only given only 30 minutes to complete the essay-looking paper which had around 5 questions. That  amounts to around 2500 words in 30 minutes. (I do not know about you but I definitely cannot write that fast!) Unless you have already prepared the answers, I am certainly sure that it is impossible to complete the given task. Thus, despite my best efforts, I was only able to attempt two questions. (Seriously, it is inhumane to write so fast). My strategy was to concentrate on completing what I started so that they will understand what I am trying to say rather than writing vaguely for all the questions. Of course, I am not sure if this approach works so I cannot endorse this approach. (It is all up to everyone's personal preference.)

Phase 3: Debate
If you thought the finger-bashing stage was bad, meet the highlight of this interview. Perhaps the phase which determines if you are shortlisted into the next round of selection, candidates would be grouped into 2 groups where they will be tasked to debate on an issue. This is difficult because your success depends not only on yourself but on the entire team. With team dynamics factored in, it is not hard to see why this group interview is so tough. Candidates not only have to balance between teamwork and standing out to be noticed, they had to make sure that their points flow.
Problems often occur when candidates are too anxious to stand out. Such was the case in one of the teams that day. It is very disconcerting to hear team mates contradicting each other's points. It does not demonstrate a convincing argument to the audience. The task is made even more difficult for the candidate who is tasked to summarize all the points that his team mates brought up as points when his team mates kept redefining the teams. At some point, it only serves to confuse both the audience and the team mates. Thus, is is not hard to see the team self-destructing during the debate. Notably, the fault lies in each and everyone in the team. The first mistake made by the team was the failure to allocate independent points to each team mate. Such problems surfaced when they realised that the points presented by each members were overlapping each other.

Like a scholar once told me, the debate section is one that will make or break the deal. In fact, it depends on who is on your team as well. The section eliminates candidates who cannot function in a team. It is a very useful technique to use in an interview albeit a tough one for candidates.

Fin
After the apparent massacre, it was the end of the interview and we were dismissed. I am not sure if the procedure will be the same next year round but I hope this helped. :)

I know this is a very old song but hey, it is very catchy! Enjoy! ^^

Lyrics:
Twilight
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twi-lalalala lalalala twilight

Baby, I’ve known you for a long long time
I never thought that we would find
What we’re holding in our hands
Lately, I’ve been thinking I should make you mine
Been thinking that we should define
What we are, what we are, oh oh

And you know I love to be in control
But recently I don’t know what to do
I’m losing it over you, oh

Ooh la, ooh la
When you say my name
I can feel the flame getting stronger
Oh, let me hear you say
Ooh la, ooh la
We both feel the same
And I can’t play this game any longer

Oh boy
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twi-lalalala lalalala twilight

Closer
I love it when you lean in close
You touch my heart like you don’t know
And I’ma show you, yeah I’ma show you now

And you know I love to be in control
But recently I don’t know what to do
I’m losing it over you

Ooh la, ooh la
When you say my name
I can feel the flame getting stronger
Oh, let me hear you say
Ooh la, ooh la
We both feel the same
And I can’t play this game any longer

Oh boy
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twi-lalalala lalalala twilight

Yeah girl, I think about you all of the time
I love your smile and the way that you shine
Wondering how I’m going to make you mine
When it turns to night, I will make it right
So many things I’ve been waiting to say
Held in my heart for a day like today
I wanna hold you till the light fades away
I wanna hold you till the light fades away

Ooh la, ooh la
When you say my name
I can feel the flame getting stronger
Oh, let me hear you say
Ooh la, ooh la
We both feel the same
And I can’t play this game any longer

Oh boy
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twi-lalalala lalalala twilight
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twilight
I’m loving this twi-lalalala lalalala twilight

Secret War Journal[7 March 2013]
It has been a year since I changed to HTC Wildfire S (I just realised I did not post about this. I am so sorry about this.). Granted, it was a little premature to change a smartphone just a year after you changed phone (it can be really costly). In my defence, I needed to upgrade my mobile plan to include mobile data. I survived without mobile data for so long, so why the urgent need to acquire it? As it turns out, there is no wifi in my workplace (the horror! Hahas!) and I require the use of internet to utilise the application known as 'whatsapp'. My colleagues (and boss) uses whatsapp to disseminate information because of the useful chat function that legacy SMS seems to be lacking in. (Now you know how to kill whatsapp. Hahas!)

Since I was going to upgrade my mobile plan, I could get a new phone as well. However, since the original plan was to replace my phone next year, it was not within my budget to get a high-end phone. It did not make much sense to bring a high-end phone to my workplace anyways, until I am sure that there are no more thief cases in the compound (which is almost impossible to conclude, by the way). As a result, I chose a mid-range smartphone. In doing so, it is unlikely that I would be getting a high-end phone any time soon (judging by the amount of time required to allocate a sufficient amount of cash for it).

First Impression
It was a last minute decision to change the back cover colour from white to black and despite what others may say about it, I did not regret it. The white back gave too great a contrast to the black front, making it look a bit too attention-seeking.
The overall design is sleek. I like how Sony refrained from making the phone looking too rigid. The round corners helped prevent the phone from appearing too squarish.

Performance-wise, the dual-core processor works like a charm on the Xperia V. Tasks are completed promptly and there is minimal waiting time for applications to load. The touchscreen is sufficiently sensitive, I do not have difficulty using the touchscreen.

The phone is also very light, weighing just 120g, sometimes it is hard to remember that you are actually holding something. In addition to that, the size of the phone is akin to a card, the phone is not very thick, measuring 10.7 mm. To me, it gives the phone a very stylish look.

However, the phone is a let-down in battery life. Using the phone, I can almost see the battery level decreasing by the minute. It might be the energy consumption from the usage of LTE network is too high. I would update you guys at a later date if that is the case.

Looking towards the future, I am quite worried about the dust covers for the USB ports and audio jacks. It is the rubber flap design which potentially suffers from wear-and-tear from excessive use. Eventually, it may break or tear off, damaging the overall design of the phone (and possibly it's waterproof feature)

Full Review [17 April 2013]
It has been a month since I got this phone. While some things such as the specifications never change, a longer period of usage should reveal the phone's true nature.

Firstly, I am happy to note that the weak battery life initially observed was due to the fact that the battery stats file was not calibrated yet. (That is a lesson to all who owns an android phone, if you just updated the OS, flashed a new ROM or reset your phone, your battery stats file would need to be re-calibrated.) In addition to that, I realised Xperia's backlight consumes an enormous amount of battery. Reducing the screen's brightness to around 7% greatly improved the battery life. Now, the phone can survive normal usage (Mobile Data LTE, casual internet surfing, messaging) without requiring re-charging for a day. That is a pretty decent for a modern day smartphone.

However, I do wish to highlight that the drawback from using a screen at low brightness setting would be the glare from the sunlight. Unfortunately, Xperia V does not seem to come with a anti-glare screen. Thus, it suffers from glares from the sunlight when a low brightness setting is used, resulting in a drop in visibility of the screen. This can be rectified with a higher brightness in the display setting, at the cost of battery performance, of course. That said, if you have portable chargers handy at all times, feel free to set at a higher brightness setting to take full advantage of Xperia V's vibrant screen.

Secondly, while the Walkman application is good, it seems to drain a fair bit of my battery. This is interesting because, in general, you would associate listening to music as an activity that would not drink up a large portion of the phone's battery. Even though when compared to more CPU-intensive applications, it does not drain that much battery, it uses up battery significantly faster than its counterparts in other phones.

There is one more strange issue with Walkman that I am not yet sure why. With the screen off, it would play a number of songs before stopping. At first thought, you would think that the phone is lagging but once you turn the screen on, it plays the next song. This is kind of strange in that, it does not play songs continuously in the playlist (note that it stops playing the playlist in the middle, not at the last song). It does damage the overall music experience but I must admit it is useful when you listen to songs and sleep.
(Another note: Even though it stops playing, I noticed that it will play the next song after a long pause if you leave the screen off. This is really strange.)
(This is fixed with the recent patch 9.1.A.1.1.40. Hooray! :)

Blood Type Personailty

Wednesday, April 10, 2013
Secret War Journal[10 April 2013]

Find out what blood type you are and see if it matches your personality.

'TYPE A'
Type As most often described themselves in ways related to the following characteristics: sensitive to the needs of others, good listeners, detail oriented, analytical, creative and inventive. Type As may seem calm on the outside, but inside, you’re filled with anxiety and worry. You’re perfectionists and often shy and sensitive. Usually introverted, you’re stable and thoughtful. You make good listeners and are sensitive to color and your surroundings. You like to be fashionable and are up on the latest trends, but never flashy or gaudy. You like romantic settings and often shun reality for fantasy worlds. A is most compatible with A and AB in the love department. Common career choices: accountant, librarian, economist, writer, computer programmer, and gossip columnist.
Blood Type A - Tend to be cooperative, sensitive, clever, passionate and smart. Often bottling up anxiety in order to get along with others, they may hold in their emotions until they explode. Many are tense, impatient and unable to sleep well. While they are capable of leadership positions, they may not take them because the stress is not good for their tightly wired systems.

'TYPE B'
Blood Type B's often described themselves in ways related to the following characteristics: subjective, easygoing, creative, original and flexible. In another study, Type B's scored significantly higher on "intuiting," indicating a preference or sixth sense information; and they scored high on the "intuiting/feeling" combination, indicating that they tend to be insightful, mystical, idealistic, creative, globally-oriented, people-oriented and good at imagining. They also reported that they learned best through listening, then reflecting on and interpreting what they had observed. Perhaps the nomadic life of the steppes contributed to long hours given over to talk as well as ample time for meditation and reflection. Type B's can be very goal-oriented and often complete the ambitious tasks set before them. Outgoing and very charming, you’re good at reading people and providing support. Though critical of appearance (but not your own), you aren’t picky and are unlikely to dwell over the little things.
Type Bs are impulsive individualists who often create their own path in life. You are very strong and optimistic. B is most compatible with B and AB lovers. Common career choices: cook, hairdresser, military leader, talk show host, and journalist. Blood type B individuals tend to be balanced: thoughtful like A's and yet ambitious like O's. They are empathetic, easily understanding others' points of view, yet often hesitating to challenge or confront. Chameleon-like and flexible, they make good friends.

'TYPE O'
Type O’s most often described themselves in ways related to the following characteristics; responsible, decisive, organized, objective, rule-conscious, and practical. Both male and female Type O’s reported a higher percentage of the mesomorphic body type when compared to controls. Interestingly, Type O’s also scored significantly higher than the rest in “sensing” – using the 5 senses to gather information, and in the sensing-thinking combination, indicating that they are more detail and fact oriented, logical, precise and orderly.
Type O's are the social butterflies. Often popular and self-confident, you are very creative and always seem to be the center of attention. You make a good impression on people and you’re often quite attractive. Organized and determined, your stubbornness will help you reach your goals. You make good leaders. Lovewise, O is most compatible with O and AB. Common career choices: banker, politician, gambler, minister, investment broker, and pro athlete. Blood Type O - Tend to be loners or leaders and are intuitive, focused, self-reliant and daring. They handle stress better than other blood types and have strong immune systems, a well developed physique and a physically active nature.

'TYPE AB'
Type AB often receives mixed messages about emotional health. While you tend to be drawn to other people and are friendly and trusting, there is a side of you that feels alienated from the larger community. At your best, you are intuitive and spiritual, with an ability to look beyond the rigid confines of society. You are passionate in your beliefs, but you also want to be liked by others and this can create conflicts. In an independent study, Type ABs described themselves as emotional, passionate, friendly, trusting and empathetic. Type ABs are considered some of the most interesting of the blood types, both John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe were Type ABs and although both are long gone, they hold a place in our national psyche to this day. Not surprisingly, ABs can be quite dualistic, possessing both A and B traits. You may be shy and outgoing, and hesitant and confident. You often stand out from others, don’t like labels, and are nice and easy going. You are logical and determined to do things correctly. Usually trustworthy, you like to help others. You often speak in a serious manner. Your patience, concentration, and intelligence are admirable. AB can find a soul mate with any other blood type. Common career choices: bartender, lawyer, teacher, sales representative, and social worker.
Blood Type AB - Tend to be very charming and popular. They don't sweat the small stuff and can be seen as spiritual and even at times a bit "flaky". Only about 2 - 5% of the population are blood type AB. There is never a dull moment in a AB's life, so if you find one for a friend, consider yourself lucky! Youll enjoy some exciting times together! Sometimes it is difficult to be an AB. AB's don't like to fit in anyone else's "boxes". If they feel too confined, they'll break out of that box and do things their own way.

Colourful Dining

Pay Attention to Colours
There are a number (of) studies on the effect of colours and how they affect people. These findings can be well-applied in the dining area. Consider introducing these hues into your dining area, on the walls, furniture, lighting, linen and tableware. Contrast the colours of your furniture with the walls, or use different tones of the same colour for a dash of style.

Notice that many picture perfect dining areas are cream coloured? This is because the gentle hue is soothing and creates a relaxing atmosphere while easing the appetite. It is also advisable to employ warm, earthy tones like beige and brown, which can clam the system when enjoying a meal.

Yellow is a sociable hue and stimulates conversation over the dining table, but it has to be carefully matched with the lighting as it can result in a nasty shade of green in the wrong light.

Red is believed to be an appetite stimulant and a colour that increases metabolism but refrain from using too much as it is associated with agression.

Orange is believed to improve appetites and aid digestion, but refrain from using it to a major extent, like having orange walls. It can, however, be used in different shades like peach and apricot, and on smaller things like napkins, table cloths and table decoration.

Warm colours like gold create an inviting look and can add a touch of splendour to your dining area. Combined with lighting or candlelight, gold creates a warm glow against the walls. Purple is a very rare colour in nature and can cause things to look artificial, but when used tastefully, it can convey opulence and make your dining area look one of a kind. Finally, avoid blue and shades of pink and violet because they repress appetites. Besides the aforementioned colours, the popular hues used for dining areas are creamy or golden yellow, wine, dusty rose, burgundy and terracotta.

Food Colours
Green and brown are common and appetising food colours, whereas blue is well-known as the least appetising hue. Since olden times, people have instinctively learned to avoid food that appeared toxic or spoiled, often identified by its blue, black or purple colours.

Blue is an extremely rare colour in food - there are no blue vegetables or meat. In fact, experiments showed that food dyed blue can test subjects to lose their appetite. On a lighter note, consider using a blue light bulb in your dining area or have your food on a blue plate if you're on a diet.

In summary
  • Cream coloured hues is soothing, relaxing and improves appetite
  • Warm, earthy tones (e.g. Beige, brown) calm the system
  • Green and brown are common appetising colours
  • Yellow is a sociable hue; stimulates conversation
  • Red improves appetite and increases metabolism
  • Orange improves appetite and digestion
  • Blue, pink, purple, black repress appetite
